Intercultural Foundations Certificate

This certificate represents the completion of a balanced curriculum in intercultural theory and practice comprising courses and workshops offered by ICI. Holders of this certificate will have investigated a range of intercultural topics that includes both conceptual foundations and current practice. The certificate requires the completion of the equivalent of 15 days of ICI-related training based around the Summer Institute for Intercultural Communication (SIIC).

Requirements: Complete one of the following learning activities:

  • Attend 5 days of training at SIIC and 10 additional days of training offered by ICI, such as other SIIC workshops, Master of Arts in Intercultural Relations (MAIR) courses, or Intercultural Development Inventory (IDI) seminars. In addition, training gained from other organizations that collaborate with ICI (e.g., the University of Krems in Austria) may also be used to satisfy part of the requirements.

    or

  • Attend one full SIIC summer session composed of 13 days of training plus 6 evening programs.

    or

  • Serve as a SIIC intern.

After you have completed the learning activities, submit:

  • A list of each activity (workshop, course, evening program, etc.) that you are using to meet the requirements. In the case of workshops or courses, please include copies of the Certificates of Completion; for each evening program, write a short paragraph describing the event and its relevance to your intercultural learning.
  • A copy of your current resume.
  • A letter of application (2-4 pages) indicating how the training you received blends theory and practice in ways that are useful for you. For example, you might reflect on how a specific theory or model you learned has helped you in pursuing your personal interests or professional goals and how your behavior or practice has changed because of that new knowledge. The purpose of this letter is to allow you to reflect on the coherence and relevance of your learning to your life or work.
