IDI Qualifying Seminars
IDI, LLC: Mitchell R. Hammer, Ph.D.
Represented by the Intercultural Communication Institute

[Registration Form]

The Three-Day Qualifying Seminar

The Intercultural Development Inventory™ (IDI) is a statistically reliable, cross-culturally valid measure of an individual’s and group’s intercultural competence. Grounded in the Developmental Model of Intercultural Sensitivity (DMIS), the IDI has been successfully used since 1998 in corporate, academic, and other settings to aid individual coaching and action-planning, to guide real and virtual multicultural team development, to generate needs analyses for targeted training, and to conduct program evaluation, organizational development, diversity programs, and research efforts. The IDI and associated products and services are owned and operated by Mitchell R. Hammer, Ph.D., through IDI, LLC and offered by the Intercultural Communication Institute.

2008 IDI QUALIFYING SEMINARS

Minneapolis, Minnesota
October 23-25, 2008

Krems, Austria
December 1-3, 2008

Portland, Oregon
December 11-13, 2008

Seminars are scheduled from 9:00 am to 5:30 pm each day.

These three-day seminars have the overall goal of preparing participants to effectively use the Intercultural Development Inventory™ in corporate, academic, government and not-for-profit organizations. Attendance at the IDI Qualifying Seminar is required to use the IDI assessment. Each participant will receive and IDI Manual that includes detailed interpretive guidelines and written descriptions of procedures. During the seminar, participants will have the opportunity to:

  • Examine major differences in the way "culture" has historically been viewed
  • Contrast how the IDI differs from traditional measures of intercultural competence
  • Review the rigorous research procedures used in developing the IDI, including the cross-culturally derived items and reliability and validity of the IDI
  • Learn how to interpret individual and group IDI profiles of intercultural competence
  • Practice giving IDI feedback in supportive, role-play scenarios
  • Gain skills in using the IDI for training needs assessment, program evaluation and other "large group" assessments

FACULTY: MITCHELL R. HAMMER, PH.D., IDI, LLC

Mitchell R. Hammer, Ph.D., is President of Hammer Consulting, LLC, an intercultural competence development and conflict resolution firm, and Hammer Consulting S.A.F.E. Hostage Operations, LLC, an organization that improves critical incident management and crisis negotiation. He is also professor emeritus of International Peace and Conflict Resolution in the School of International Service at the American University in Washington D.C. Dr. Hammer provides consultation and training in the areas of intercultural competence, international study abroad, mediation, hostage/crisis and conflict negotiation, critical incident management, and author identification to a number of private corporations, not-for-profit organizations, state and local law enforcement agencies, and federal agencies, including NASA Johnson Space Center, AFS, International, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the National Institutes of Health. Dr. Hammer’s cutting-edge work has resulted in (1) the Intercultural Development Inventory, an assessment instrument focusing on intercultural competence that is widely used in many organizations; (2) the Intercultural Conflict Style (ICS) Inventory, a theoretical model and assessment tool used by mediators, trainers, managers, and counselors to examine cultural differences in how conflict is resolved; and (3) the S.A.F.E. model of crisis negotiation, which is currently employed to de-escalate hostage and crisis situations in federal and local law enforcement agencies.

Dr. Hammer was appointed by the director of the National Institutes of Medicine (NIH) as a charter member of the Cancer Advisory Panel for the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine. He also advised the government of Japan on negotiation strategies concerning the hostage crisis in Peru, as well as Japanese private-sector representatives who had employees taken hostage. He has also advised negotiators involved in successfully securing the release of an American taken hostage in Latin America. Dr. Hammer has advised the Behavior and Performance Laboratory of the NASA Johnson Space Center for the International Space Station Program on cross-cultural communication. In 1996, Dr. Hammer, along with four associates, identified a set of letters with the writing of the so-called “Unabomber Manifesto” helping identify Ted Kaczynski as the “Unabomber.”

Dr. Hammer has gained an international reputation as an advisor, consultant, researcher, and workshop leader. His book Saving Lives: The S.A.F.E. Model for Negotiating Hostage and Crisis Incidents (in press) presents a comprehensive explanation of the innovative S.A.F.E. approach for resolving crisis situations. His previous book, Dynamic Processes of Crisis Negotiation: Theory, Research and Practice (1997), was honored with the “Outstanding Book Award” in 1998 by the International Association of Conflict Management. He has published widely, with over 50 articles, and has won numerous awards for his scholarship from various professional organizations, including the “Senior Interculturalist Award of Achievement” by the Society of Intercultural Education, Training and Research. Dr. Hammer frequently provides expert analysis for the media, including NBC News, CNN, FOX National News, CTV in Canada, NHK television in Japan, Voice of America, Agence France Presse, Associated Press, United Press International, Reuters, USA Today, and the Washington Post.
