17 | Understanding and Developing Global Leadership

Organizations are struggling to understand the ways in which the globalization process influences leadership. This workshop will tackle the subject by considering theoretical and practical aspects of global leadership and their implications for managers who lead in a global business context.

Designed for
Consultants and professionals responsible for global leadership development in international organizations.

Objectives
Participants will have the opportunity to:

  • Understand the emergence of global leadership and its need in international organizations
  • Identify the multidisciplinary roots of global leadership as a theoretical construct and empirical phenomenon
  • Review the current state of global leadership research and practice
  • Understand the current realities of global leadership development in multinational corporations
  • Identify the individual and organizational antecedents and outcomes of effective global leadership
  • Evaluate instruments used to assess global leadership competencies
  • Identify and compare various models of global leadership development
  • Explore the role of leadership in leading global teams
  • Understand the relationship between global leadership knowledge creation and transfer
  • Explore how effective leaders lead change in global organizations
  • Identify approaches for designing global leadership development programs in organizations

Learning Activities
The workshop will be highly interactive, and include:

  • Presentations of conceptual frameworks and models
  • Case analysis in small groups
  • Evaluation of common global leadership assessment tools through personal examination
  • Discovering appropriate research and related resources for developing global leaders
  • In-class teamwork to design and present an organizational strategy for developing global leaders
Faculty: Allan Bird and Mark Mendenhall

Dr. Allan Bird the is president of The Kozai Group, Inc. He is also the Eiichi Shibusawa-Seigo Arai Professor of Japanese Studies and the director of the International Business Institute at the University of Missouri-St. Louis. He has published more than ninety scholarly articles and chapters focusing on international human resource management, with a particular emphasis on global leadership development, intercultural sensemaking, and international negotiations. Allan is the author/editor of seven books, including Global Leadership: Research, Practice, and Development. He published, with Roger Dunbar and Tom Mullen, Bridging Cultures, a CD-ROM and workbook for expatriates and their families.

Dr. Mark E. Mendenhall is the senior vice president of The Kozai Group, Inc., a consulting firm that specializes in global leadership and expatriate productivity. He also holds the J. Burton Frierson Chair of Excellence in Business Leadership at the University of Tennessee, Chattanooga, and is an internationally recognized scholar/consultant in global leadership development and the cross-cultural effectiveness of expatriate managers. Mark has published over sixty articles and chapters in academic and professional journals and books, and has authored/edited sixteen books, the most recent being Global Leadership: Research, Practice, and Development.
